As of late 2021&#39;s <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a> recommendations, this emoji design has multiple <a href="/emoji-modifier-sequence/">skin tone modifier</a> options. Handshake

A stylized globe, with blue <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridian_(geography)">meridians</a> (longitudes) and latitude. Depicted with light-blue grid&nbsp;of lines on a white, blue, or empty circle.

May be used as a symbol of the internet or world wide web, global communications, international affairs, connectivity and networks, time zones, coordinates, or the world more generally.

May appear as an icon on Apple devices to change (language) keyboards.

Globe with Meridians

A metal device, dropped out of a boat to prevent it drifting away from the current location.
An anchor also refers to a place on a webpage that may be directly <a title="🔗 Link Symbol" href="/link/">linked</a> to, rather than simply loading a page and requiring a user to scroll to the correct location.

Anchor

A mobile phone (cell phone), as used to text, check social media, or take <a href="/selfie/">selfies</a>. Depicted as a black or gray smartphone with a generic blue screen or multicolored app icons. Commonly used for various content concerning mobile phones, technology, and communication.

The designs from Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung resemble phones offered by their respective companies, e.g., iPhone. WhatsApp&rsquo;s design features a night sky as its wallpaper, displaying the time as 9:34.

<a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/mobile-phone/">Early designs</a> for the mobile phone emoji from au by KDDI resembled a traditional&nbsp;<a href="/telephone-receiver/">telephone receiver</a>, and vice versa, before having their codepoints swapped in later releases.

Mobile Phone

A laptop personal computer. Depicted as a black or gray device, opened to show a dark or blue screen, keyboard, and touchpad.

Commonly used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity.

Previous designs resembled a <a href="/desktop-computer/">desktop computer</a>&nbsp;(e.g., <a href="/apple/ios-9.0/laptop/">iMac</a>) on many platforms, hence its Unicode name of&nbsp;Personal Computer. Apple&rsquo;s design now resembles a MacBook.

Personal Computer

A <a href="/desktop-computer/">computer</a> printer, as at a home office. Generally depicted as a grayish device with a power button and paper loaded in its tray, sometimes printing out a document. May be used for various content concerning printing, including as a Print icon,&nbsp;as well as for office work and technology more generally.

Not to be confused with <a href="/fax-machine/">📠 Fax Machine</a>.

Printer

A symbol for email. Depicted as the back of an envelope imprinted with a capital letter E (for electronic) or @ (at) sign.&nbsp;Commonly used as an icon before an email address.

The envelope is generally white with the E or @ symbols shown in&nbsp;blue. Apple, Google, and Twitter&#39;s&nbsp;designs feature the letter E, while Microsoft, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Samsung&rsquo;s the @ sign.

Google&#39;s&nbsp;envelope was <a href="/google/android-8.0/e-mail/">previously</a> yellow in color.

E-Mail Symbol

A white piece of paper secured by a silver clip on a brown clipboard, as used as a writing surface when standing. Commonly used for content concerning various types of documents and writing, especially in sports.

Many platforms indicate text with dark lines. WhatsApp&rsquo;s design shows lined paper. Facebook&rsquo;s features the easter egg of a table with first names and numbers, perhaps as birthdates:

Pushpin

A pushpin, as used to indicate a location on a <a href="/world-map/">map</a>. Generally depicted as an upright pin with a red, round head.

Commonly used to indicate locations and notably featured in the <a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/pushpin-emoji-detour">Pushpin Emoji Detour</a> and <a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/distance-between">Distance Between</a> memes on Twitter. Also used unofficially as an icon for Pinterest or Google Maps.

Facebook&rsquo;s pin is oriented at a 45&deg; angle, as were previous designs on several other platforms.

Round Pushpin

A silver paper clip, as used to hold together sheets of paper&mdash;or remove a SIM card from a <a href="/mobile-phone/">mobile phone</a>. Shown positioned at various angles.

Occasionally used to represent school/office supplies. Also sometimes used as an icon before a <a href="/link/">hyperlink</a>. Displays as Microsoft mascot&nbsp;<a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/clippy">Clippy</a>&nbsp;on Windows 11.

Paperclip

Two or more silver <a href="/paperclip/">paper clips</a> linked together, generally forming an inverted V.&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s design displays three paper clips.

Occasionally used to represent school/office supplies or metaphorical connections. Also sometimes used as an icon before a <a href="/link/">hyperlink</a>.

Linked Paperclips

A pair of scissors, as used to cut paper or <a href="/person-getting-haircut/">hair</a>. Generally shown open, blades down, with red handles. Commonly used for content concerning haircuts, fashion design, arts and crafts, and various senses of cutting.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s design features green handles with blades pointed up.

Black Scissors

A locked (closed) <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padlock">padlock</a>, as used to secure a latch or <a href="/chains/">chain</a>, or as an icon for a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transport_Layer_Security">secure internet connection</a>, private account, or locked device. Generally depicted with a gold base and silver shackle. WhatsApp&rsquo;s design is silver.

Commonly used for content concerning safety, security, privacy, and protection as well as various senses of lock, e.g., locked in/down.

This emoji <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/emojipedia-now-with-https/">does not display in page titles</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;Apple&rsquo;s Safari web browser, presumably to prevent less reputable sites from pretending to be secure (encrypted using <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPS">HTTPS</a>).

Lock

A metal bolt with a nut threaded around it, as by a <a href="/wrench/">wrench</a>. Often positioned at a 45&deg; angle, the head of the bolt at the upper left. Commonly used for various content concerning tools, building, and construction. May also be used for other hardware, including screws.

Apple&rsquo;s bolt <a href="/apple/ios-9.0/nut-and-bolt/">previously resembled</a>&nbsp;a screw, <a href="/google/android-7.0/nut-and-bolt/">Google&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;a dumbbell; Microsoft&rsquo;s design <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/nut-and-bolt/">previously featured</a> the nut and bolt separately.

Nut and Bolt

A round metal gear with teeth.

Used to talk about tools and engineering (both hardware and software). Also commonly used to indicate settings on user interfaces.&nbsp;May also represent hard work, e.g., grinding in sports.

Samsung&rsquo;s design originally&nbsp;featured a white gear icon on a green square.

Gear

Two parallel lengths of silver chain. Occasionally used as an icon before a <a href="/link/">hyperlink</a> or for metaphorical connections or chains, e.g., slang&nbsp;off the chains.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/chains/">previously featured</a> stylized, white chains in a blue square, as a sign or icon for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_chains">snow chains</a> for winter driving.

Chains

A gold or silver hook. Can be used to represent literal hooks like the kinds you use to crochet or catch fish.

Also use metaphorically to talk about boxing or punching, music (the catchy part of a song), or in phrases like hook me up, hook up,&nbsp;getting hooked (on something), or hook, line, and sinker.&nbsp;

Hook

A silver safety pin or clip, as used to fasten fabric. Generally shown clasped at a 45&deg; angle, with its spring at the lower left.

May be used for various content concerning arts, crafts, and sewing. Not to be confused with <a href="/paperclip/">📎&nbsp;Paperclip</a>.

Safety Pin

The symbol for infinity enclosed within a circle or square.

Originally encoded as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acid-free_paper">symbol to represent&nbsp;acid-free paper</a>, this <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Permanent_Paper_Law">permanent paper sign</a>&nbsp;was later given emoji presentation to form an infinity emoji.

May also be used by members of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_rights_movement">autism rights movement</a> to represent&nbsp;neurodiversity.
